So, I will be investing $150 in an electric hotwire for my chickens, as I have a daytime fox problem and want the additional protection.
I will be getting a charger (plug in type, we have extension cords out to the coop, soon real electricity), fiberglass posts, and setting them up at 6'' and 12'' or so. I will need to take it down during winter, but I am not sure what 'wire' to use.
Certified high tensile electrical wire, braided poly wire (the white stringlike material), or poly tape?
Will I need to shut off the electric fence when it rains?

Just regular electric fence wire---14 or even 17 gauge would be fine for what you are doing. You do not need to cut it off when it rains. Cut it off if you are going to turn the chickens out if there is a chance of them getting on it. Just for info A fox can/will jump right across a 12" wire.

I will have a second fence behind the hotwires, double layered 4.5' tall chicken wire. I am using what resources are available to me.
