Hello

I’m looking for advice/ experiences electrifying a metal run. I am planning to do this with my Omlet Walk-in run using this electric fence charger https://a.co/d/5PFmF8Z

Do you think this will work to deter rats?

I will be putting it on at night once the chickens are safe inside their coop. Coop is free-standing inside the run and not connected to the run in any way.

My run is already covered in hardware cloth but the rats are finding a way in.

I am doing all the other normal things for rats (no food left out etc)

Just really looking for advice on the electrifying metal run

Thanks in advance.

Rats tunnel under ground and/or use pre-existing tunnels.

Consider posying a photo of your set up.

I found that even though I collected feed everyday.. the rats would still come around for the "shrapnel" left behind from the birds normal mess.

I also wonder if they might not be prone to eating the droppings, like my dogs do.. due to the high protein content and otherwise indigested grains/nutrients? :sick

I put fencing on the bottom of my run. That seems to do the trick.

I’d advise you to encircle your run area with an electric poultry fence for rats. A single strand won’t be effective except for larger animals, you’ll want netting.

But you can’t do what you suggest due to the way these things work. The run wire - the skirt, the support posts - will conduct your charge until it finds a way to complete the circuit to ground. That will be the first route it finds to get to earth, which will be immediately through the skirt or a post likely. So when a creature touches the run, unless they touch it before it is grounded elsewhere they won’t get zapped. Consult Premier1 about your needs, they have great customer support.
