ELI5 Why do so many ppl treat chickens expendable??

That's how I always thought of it too. Why kill them if they gave you eggs and companionship their whole lives? I usually sell my older birds to make room for new ones, but if I really like them I just keep them for the rest of their life.
Yes! Just watching them makes me feel good too. They are awesome in my opinion.

Spur removal is common and necessary for they can cause damage to the hens and/or the bird growing them. The outer sheath is removed greatly reducing the size of the spurs, it doesn't leave a "hole".

I've hatched and dispatched many a male chicken, layer breeds not broilers, they were delicious. I'd let them get big enough to be more worthwhile and right about the time they started creating havoc with the females.

Poultry is food, both eggs and meat, but many people have forgotten that.
Anthropomorphism runs deep and wide(and illogically IMO).
Exactly. Spur maintenance is something I do regularly with my rooster as well, to prevent injuries to the hens.

Our area uses the bodies to draw in coyotes for shooting. I use them for feeding the predators away from my coop. They're coming near either way, at least with my kill pile they eat there and don't come closer
I feed the predators chickens I cull, or the innards from butchering.

Is this a massive farm setting? Are you living off of selling eggs? I mean if it’s a massive farm are you shoulder to shoulder in chickens?
I’m not be rotten, I’m truly asking.

And then there is no room for new birds to continue laying what you need. Not everyone has unlimited space for new birds to pick up the slack of older birds
I don’t have unlimited space, I wish I did. I’d have me some cows too!

I’m almost positive my pooches just use me, because they can’t open cheese themselves.
Well yeah but they also look to you for guidance and miss you when your gone
I disagree. Many of my chickens get very excited to see me whether I have food or not, sure they love food, but they also just like to follow me around, sit on my lap, and just hang out and get petted if I don't have food or they were already fed. I feel like anyone who owns chickens would know that they are curious, sentient, and have different personalities. If you love them, they will love you back. Really not much different from a dog or cat, and shouldn't be treated much different
Maybe it's just mine. I've spent a lot of time with them from when they were young to adults, they are never nice like want to be aroundme becausethey like me. They will come to me when I come in because they assume I have food, if they see I don't they go about their day. Chickens look to eachother for guidance and support, not humans. Even if they don't mind you I highly doubt they enjoy being picked up, they probably allow it though.
