ELI5 Why do so many ppl treat chickens expendable??

I heard small dogs live longer than big dogs. That might be true for chickens too since she was a dutch bantam

Same. I used to just have mixed bantams, and still have a few left, but my favorite are Seramas so I've started breeding them the past few years and showing them. I think I have around 15 Seramas now.

For the most part, yes, but they each have their own personalities of course. I have 6 Serama chicks in the brooder that are a month old and extremely skittish for some reason and freak out when I try to pick them up or whatever. Hopefully they get friendlier as they get older because my adults are really friendly

Could be. Or she's serious about not wanting someone putting an unknown bird on her property. Biosecurity can be a big thing to some people. If it's broken, it can lead to a flock being destroyed or certifications being taken away

I have had chickens capable of opening simple locks(the ones with a hook on the side of the door, and a metal eyelet on the doorframe),

Same! I was trying to get the latch on one of the chicken pens open to let them out in the morning and the chickens were pacing, doing the annoyed call and waiting to be let out. It was harder than normal to get open for some reason and I stepped back and took a break to stare at the latch. And, suddenly, my Speckled Sussex hen, Lily, who was one waiting to get let out, came up to the door and grabbed the latch in her beak, shoved it to the side and let herself and the rest of the chickens out. I thanked her and felt stupid afterwards. A chicken opened a door for me . . .

and I once had a broiler boy who was so dumb, he would mount a hen and then stand there, as if to say, "well I got her, now what?" needless to say, we never got chicks out of him.

I have had those too . . . the hormonal boys that are not sure what to do about their hormones.

I disagree. Many of my chickens get very excited to see me whether I have food or not, sure they love food, but they also just like to follow me around, sit on my lap, and just hang out and get petted if I don't have food or they were already fed. I feel like anyone who owns chickens would know that they are curious, sentient, and have different personalities. If you love them, they will love you back. Really not much different from a dog or cat, and shouldn't be treated much different

I agree, I can tell many of my chickens love me, not only for food but because they really see me as a flock member. One hen in particular, Ruby, is the one I know really loves me. She is my favorite and I have never seen a chicken like her. The smartest and sweetest thing ever. And she has done things that showed very high intelligence and care for me without any reward for herself.

Just an fyi I was joking. I would never do that to someone. I like to think I’m a responsible chicken owner.
