ELI5 Why do so many ppl treat chickens expendable??

I'm just curious where it's illegal for me to kill my own dog or cat?

Here in my state it’s a felony.

I haven't seen her lately and thus wouldn't want to waste eggs. I hate boiled eggs so won't eat them. I do know they have their trap baited with scratch which most chickens adore. It's just there are woods nearby which are far more interesting than a strange metal trap. I'll bring scrambled eggs with me if I remember, but it's a game of patience
