I think this is probably a good plan. You may want to invest in a cheap game camera to put in your nesting area for next attempt. Maybe catch whatever is happening so you can figure out how to stop it.I found #4, nutmeg, with a similar dent AND a small hole on it. Cracked it open and it's also a nicely developed chick still alive. It's so sad. I composted her and I will be putting the last 2 eggs in my incubator tonight. I don't know what exactly is happening to the eggs, maybe other chickens pecking them open and trying to eat them when bippy got off to eat. It's too dangerous for the eggs to leave them there, whatever's happening to them. I'll put fake eggs under nippy for now and if they hatch I'll make Bippy adopt her own children lol.
Yeah the egg shells were definitely not strong enough and that was part of the risk I was taking in incubating pullet eggs. But I find weird that my chickens are pecking the eggs. I have fake eggs in all my nesting boxes to try to deter that but today not only did I find #4 with a hole in it, I also found an empty eaten egg shell for the first time. I m planning on collecting eggs like 3x a day for whoever's pecking to stop. Also going to try to hook up a camera in the coop. Would be very helpful to identify egg layers and egg eaters. It's possible that the pullet eggs are just too fragile and not as strong as they'd be as the girls age.
