I’ve wondered about Elphie’s breed since I got her. She was a cute little chipmunk chick and I was told she was a Cream Legbar. It wasn’t long before it became apparent that she is not a Cream Legbar. But what is she? She came from a local feed store, which I believe bought from Hoover’s. For awhile, I thought maybe she was a Starlight Green Egger. But yesterday, she laid two tiny broken, transparent, almost certainly not green eggs. Today, she laid a small, light brown/pink/cream egg which managed to stay together long enough to be harvested. So what is she? I’ve included pictures of her from babyhood(2-3 days old) to today (19 weeks) and her egg.

I'm going to go with Welsummer or Welsummer mix. Her body is still working out the egg laying kinks so her eggs may look different once she gets the hang of it.

Do you have oyster shell available?

I gave her oyster shell last night. This egg was almost there shell-wise.

They need access to calcium at all times so just leave a little dish of oyster shell (separate from the food). If you just gave it to her last night for the first time, it will take time for her body to absorb it.

After the shell forms in the body, it gets it's coating with color. It's possible that, as a brand new layer, the process wasn't complete. So I still think give her a few more days and you may see a different color egg.

Yeah. I planned to leave it for them. I still need to get a designated holder for it, but I just put it in a dog dish for now. I have five who are yet to lay, and I thought she was a bit young yet, so I hadn’t bought anywhere to keep the oyster shell. I actually live across the street from a huge oyster flat, so it amused me to be buying oyster shells. They use it for gravel around here.

She's gorgeous! I am very new to chicks. I have 2 groups currently, the oldest of which is only 4 weeks. But I wanted to show you pictures of my Shirley, from when I got her to now at 4 weeks. Shirley is an OEGB, so obviously won't grow up to look like your Elphie. But the similarities as chicks are pretty neat. I love how they change as they grow, and it's a fascinating experience, raising chicks.

Congratulations on your first eggs! I'm sure Elphie will be laying like a pro in no time.

Note- I don't know Shirley's gender, but my daughters and I named her/him after Shirley in the Anne of Green Gables books, who was a boy. So the name will stay either way. 😊

Shirley is adorable! Thanks for sharing! It seems like a long time ago that mine were that little, but it really was only a few months.

Thank you, she's a sweetheart. It really does seem like a long time, somehow, but I've only had them for just over 3 weeks. They just grow so fast and change every day.
