I called the feed store after hours just thinking I would leave a message... and they were still there!! So I drove the twenty minutes to see what they had... I came home with:

4 Aracanas (spelled wrong)
6 Silver Laced Wyandottes
2 Buff Orps
2 Australorps

All about three days old!!

They are all tucked in the brooder out in the barn now.. I am still smiling! lol

I honestly didn't think my husband would even go for it! lol

OH! And the stray laid an egg, lol, evidently she was just having a slow day.. she usually lays around 11:00 am .. so when I got home at 12:30 and didn't find an egg I just wondered.. but when I went to put my gang up for the night the egg was there!

A couple more questions...

First, my peeps are doing great! I did lose one SLW the next day.. I think it must have been stress related..looks like it died in its sleep though. poor thing

AND.. I caught the stray chicken today!
ya.gif
She was in my smaller tractor as I was taking one of the roos out so I just put him in with her and closed the door on them! HE was QUITE happy to be in there with her! lol
love.gif
When I got home from work at noon she looked a little nervous... so I stuck a small cardboard box with some hay in it in the tractor.. I hardly got it on the ground and she was in it rustling around and clucking like crazy! Fifteen minutes later I had a nice fresh warm egg!

Tonight she will go into the coop with everyone else: Should I worry?

So now I have two tractors in use, one 3x8 and one 2x6... I only put three chicks in the smaller one at a time and move it around more during the day... I have been putting the red roo in there with a few chicks since he was the more timid of the three roos... well now he is crowing like crazy! lol

Will this cause problems later when they are all in their permanent run together?

My other two roos seem to be getting along fine together as normal.

Also, can I start feeding the new chicken layer pellets while she is in with the roo? Will it matter to him to change from the starter to that? He'll be 4 months around the 24th of this month.

Thanks again! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions soon.... Also will try to get pics of the stray and find out what she is!
Here are my three roos, what are they? Sorry its sideways....

Thanks! I was wondering about the BO and the Australorp.. they were just in the straight run box at TSC... I luv me little Australorp, lol. He has the prettiest eyes!
The RIR was supposed to be a pullet..
hmm.png
ah well....

Most of my girls started laying around 20 - 24 weeks. I did have a couple birds started at 17 weeks and one at 27 weeks. I used a tractor for about a month then I made the pullets a small run 10' x 20' approximately. They had their own coop.

Here are some pictures of my coops.

I would quarantine before introducing her, as she maybe be carrying diseases and could hurt the whole flock.

I don't think so, but someone with more experience should be able to answer more confidently.

I don't know if roosters should eat layer feed, as they are not laying eggs. Their nutritional needs may be different.

Your roos are beautiful!

If shes been in the coop repeatedly laying an egg a day and living in the yard anyway wouldnt any danger of contamination already presented itself?

I read the entire thread excited to see a pic of your self adopted chicky!

All of our chickens ... RIP

were wayward souls. The yotes killed all the girls , the Cubalaya rooster and my wild hen turkey who decided I was her BF and the chickens were her babys. So yeah im a sucker for cute homeless chickens lol

True, but if she had mites or something that needed close contact, the chance of infection would be higher in close quarters.

I'm sorry about your chickens. It sounds like they had a good home before their untimely demise.

Thank you again for all the answers and advice!

She has been in the coop for about a week when they are not in there.. she was going in to lay her eggs. And she hangs out next to the tractors all day with them. I did give her a quick once over last night after I got my hands on her. Her legs look fine, no raised scales (i think i read that as a sign of mites too?) And although I didn't get out the fine tooth comb her body looked good as well.
She wasn't too eager to have me catch her this morning to go into the tractor, but once my hands on her she settles nicely.

So far I am leaving her and the RIR roo together in the small tractor and leaving him on the starter. Will get some layer for her this weekend and figure out what to do as far as feeding them.

Anybody want some roosters? I really need to go down to one... the Australorp is picking on the BO

So I want to find homes for the BO and the RIR. And hopefully NOT have any more roos in the 13 chicks in the barn.

What is the best way to rehome them? I did at one time consider eating them but ... I just don't know.... I probably shouldn't have named them and that might be easier for me....
