I believe you've been adopted by an Old English game hen- a Lemon Blue, perhaps...is she small? She's possibly a bantam, but I don't think so from the pic.
You'll know your hens are near laying when they start squatting when you reach to pet or handle them, and you'll hear them clucking the egg song for about a week before anyone actually pops out an egg.
YAY! I am pretty sure that is what she is! Thanks so much ChooksChick!
and thanks gamblergirl.. I'll have a look and see what I can do... My husband just thinks we should eat them.. but I don't know that they have that much meat on them! lol Are BO and RIR okay for eating? I imagine you can eat just about anything, lol.
Well really looking for more breed info: I was told these were Australorps but they don't look like the ones pictured on the breed pages I've been looking at.
Honestly to me it looks like a Black Copper Maran roo: What do you think?
The hen also is getting some of the copper feathers coming in around her neck as well. Will have a photo of her in just a few.

Still possibly australorp on the black hen. Perhaps they had contamination in their breeding lines that infused the red coloring. If she lays a dark brown/reddish egg when she's laying you'll know for sure if she's a marans.
The red hen is a red sex-link.
She'll lay you some nice big brown eggs when she gets older.
