Email vs. PM

Although, it is very obnoxious if a person has a full inbox and you are trying to contact them.

Email - - - you automatically get a saved copy of your sent email
- - - you have to set up an account - - hotmail. com, gmail, internet explorer, etc.
- - - you can contact anybody with an email account

PM - - - you do not automatically get a copy of your sent PM
- - - Automatically receive this through BYC
- - - - you can contact ONLY BYC members

Sounds like you need to EXPERIENCE the difference. Let me be the first to send you a PM. It is exciting.

You should see a FLASHING Message / smiley that says you have a PM waiting for you.

That's the reason I don't care for the Message feature here. PM's have a 'reply' and a 'quote' button at the bottom.
I've asked and asked that it be changed so the message always be quoted when sending a reply.
I let my message box stay full most of the time.
<--------- My email address is available right there, though.

I think what heatherindeskies was asking is "What's the difference between BYC email and PMs through BYC?". I know that when I use my own Microsoft Outlook email account, emails are set to be saved automatically, HOWEVER, on BYC when you click the "email" button (versus the PM) button, email messages are NOT saved automatically (unless I'm missing something. Wouldnt' be the first time!).

In your profile you have the privacy tab. There you will find this screen

1) You can choose to display your email address and it will be visible to anyone at the left under your username/avatar. We have found that when we get reports of spamming via BYC, that member has the 1st radio button checked. This is the least secure option.

2) You can choose to hide your email, but allow form email. This allows a message to be sent to your email address, and you then have the option to reply to the email and thus allow the person who contacted you to have your email address. Or you can come back to BYC and contact them through the PM system. The form email will have the username of the sender in it.
This option is more secure because you have control over your email yet allows you to have broader contact with other members.

3) You can choose to hide your email and not allow form email. This is the most secure and you are limited to PM contact only.
You do risk missing contact if your inbox is full.

Your message box looks like this (I cropped the screen shot to the relevant part)

Your message limit does count the messages you save in your inbox, sent folder and other folders you have created.

This is the screen for sending a message

If you wish to save your message, you will need to click the "save message" box at the bottom of the screen right above the "send" button.

"Quoting" when you reply is a great way to cut down on message usage. If you are replying to a PM you wish to save, quote it and save it in the sent folder. Then you can delete the message in your inbox.
To use the quote feature in a PM, instead of hitting the reply, just click quote as in this example. Thank you to Nifty for his help!
When you see the message and click on it, you can hit the quote button

Once you do that, this screen will come up

You can enter your message, click "save message" and then send it.

Since you quoted it, you don't need to save it in your inbox.

Oh! THAT email (form email).
If someone has selected '-Display your e-mail address.' and I email them, a copy is saved to my 'sent email' file.

Sorry for muddying the water.

Lisa, I still think that if you click on the "email" icon or a member's email address on BYC, the message sent through BYC is not saved anywhere. Terri, please correct me if I'm wrong (in fact, I'd love to be wrong on this one b/c I always have wished that the "save a copy" option were available w/ emails through BYC!).

You are right, form email is not saved. It is just another way to be contacted. If you use that link to contact someone, you will not have a copy unless they reply quoting you.

It is the same as used on most sites to send a comment or suggestion or like when I sent a letter to the Governor of Oregon about something he did that I didn't like.

I had to copy and paste the text into a word document to save it.
