Embarking on ambitious eggsperiment

Sorry they don't seem to be hatching.

At this point, if they're still viable, if you put the egg up to your ear, you can often hear pecking or cheeping. Might give a listen just to see.

It's funny. My husband is a Marine, and I asked him if he saw chickens anywhere he went in Thailand, and he said no. He even asked another marine who he ran into that happened to have been in Thailand when he was, and that guy didn't remember seeing chickens either. Of course, outside of work, they may have had their minds on other things....

Yes, you do get plenty of chickens here, but it's just the common native Thai chickens, so not much choice as far as specific breeds are concerned. In fact, the place is overrun with the native ones

Also, Thailand is a huge exporter of poultry meat over and above supplying the domestic market. The problem is, I've contacted a few hatcheries for egg layers and even a few broilers, but they all seem to require that I order at least a thousand. Considering I only have 800 square meters of land available, I can only imagine what my wife would say if she came home to a thousand chickens in the garden. Of course my two girls, aged 3 and 5 would just love it:lol:

Actually, I guess I should be happy with the ones I have because they really are well adapted to looking after themselves. Apart from a handful or two of scratching, they get by just fine without any store bought feed, and still, for every six hens, you'll get 4 or 5 eggs each day, apart from when they go broody. Then again, it's easy to get them out of the broody mode, or at least it has been that way for me.

The only real reason I want others if for their looks. Some people like the game birds, but I would prefer good old farm looking chickens instead., and then I'd more than likely complain that they eat too much...

Okay, just going into day 23 so we'll see if anything happens today. If not, I'll give them until the end of day 25 and then it's time to open them up.

Just checking in on you...

We have three chicks and three keets from the local hatchery now, but when we tried to graft them onto our stubborn broody mama, she wouldn't take them. Probably our fault for fussing with her too much. It's been a learning experience, for sure. The babies are happy in their brooder room, but applying electric heat to keep babies warm is what we were trying to avoid. Sigh...

I hope you have some chicks, or at least that you'll try again! Best of luck!

I left the eggs with the hen for a full 25 days and then decided it's the end. When I broke eggs open, there was no sign of development at all, just a putrid smelling green mush

I suppose I was expecting a bit much, but I knew that when I started with the eggs.

On a brighter note........I have an order in for a Thai Game rooster, one of those huge fighting cocks. This is so that I can breed in some size. Well that, and also because I just want one

Of course, this being Thailand, where there's no such thing as urgency, I could be waiting for quite some time before Mr Rooster actually arrives to meet all the girls. Shame, Big Mama hen will need to step down

Will let you all know when I try the egg thingy again
