Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I’ve got two embden geese who are both a couple of months old, first the females leg got all swollen and warm and she was limping pretty bad, her leg has just healed and now the males leg has done the same. They live in a big archard and have access to a pond all the time. I was wondering if embden often get this problem. Thanks

Never had with mine. Are you offering any type of niacin while they are growing? They can have a niacin deficiency if raised on chick starter. Or could have been bitten do you have snakes, spiders etc any signs of a bite or swelling in one local area? A picture of the leg would help.

No, I live in Ireland, so there are no snakes or venomous Spiders. They had duckling starter feed. Thanks

If it was a nicin defiency, would giving them niacin now help?

They need to have a niacin supplement until At least 10-12 weeks old. The best way is the liquid b complex works faster. Actually a niacin deficiency can kill them it’s that important. And then again this may not be what it is but it’s an easy one to try along with rest and water therapy. They need at least 125 Mgs of niacin a day.

Hello Miss Lydia. I have been feeding the goslings Mazuri starter. It only has 83 ppm on the ingredients list. Do you know the conversion from ppm to mg. We haven’t had any issues but I can supplement if that is not enough.

Purina Flock Raiser only has 55ppm so I’d say your good on the niacin content in the feed. Only other thing I can say that may help is some just don’t seem to be able to assimilate the nutrients the same and even at the right feed dose of niacin may not be getting proper amount. So if issues have come up then the liquid B Complex should be tried it seems to have a quicker and better reaction if it’s a niacin deficiency. @CayugaJana can give you all the scientific info behind this. But to get ppm yo mg we need @casportpony
