I just candles this egg and did not see any veining. But when I cracked it I saw this. Did I just kill an embryo? 😩

How old was the egg?

I’m not even sure. We just noticed a hen went broody last week. We have no idea how old the eggs even are. I’m just trying to figure out if I should let her sit or get them out if the coop.

Did you candle it in a dark room? Id have thought this much blood would show through the shell during candling. But its hard to say, if it was developing, the blood vessels had broken down or broken when the egg was cracked. If there were a living embryo, you likely would've seen it, and a heartbeat. It could be a blood spot, not development.

Even if it was viable, dont beat yourself up, its a mistake that happens. If incubating, you should wait until about day 10 to toss eggs, as they can be hard to see development in and you dont want to accidentally throw out viable eggs. But day 10 you'd know for sure if it was alive or not.

I did candle it in a dark room. And could only see the yolk. Ok! Thank you! We are incubating, a hen went broody. I’ll wait a few more days to check the rest.
