Emerald Spaulding Peafowl - update

Does anybody have any? If so what is your take on them. We have a friend that has a few and I drool over them everytime I see them. Well, you know me.....what's a few more birds right? Just ordered a 1/2 dozen 7/8 hatching eggs.

Emerald Spaulding peafowl, are just now called spaulding.

Emerald just were spaulding with high % of greens.

Spaulding are just a cross of the india blues and green peafowl.

Have a few, really like the white spaulding high % of green.

Thing about breeding spaulding is they dont breed true. Can get different color of chicks from the same pair of spauldings.

Spaulding are taller birds, high % green may need heat in winter.

Steve. My take on them is that they are one of my favorite to look at... even the hens are beautiful. HOWEVER, because of the Java blood in them they are much more wild acting than the other peafowl. They spook easily, run to the back of the pen when people get near, and flip out and hit the roof when you go in the pen or get too close..... so they are prone to seriously injuring themselvs. Also because of this personality type they cant free range or they will be gone.
Of course there are always exceptions to this rule. I have one green male that will eat from my hand.... yet his son is my most flighty bird.... and the hens hate me!

I bred my java to some mixed peas ..they had great temperments.
I raised them in the house, if i left the room they would fly around looking for me. Once they were grown..well id pull into the driveway & they would come running or flying..its not easy trying to dodge 5 full sized peafowl all trying to land on your shoulders at the same time.
By that age i couldnt have them living in the house, but they wanted to be inside..so they would sit on the rail by my kitchen window & poke the glass & stare in all day. I would still let them parade in and out to raid the dogfood bowl when they "knocked" at the door though.

I think with peafowl that its just a matter of how you raise them, to me they proved to be the most tamable & domestic acting birds of all the species ive ever owned, better than a sailors parrot lol. There was no difference in temperment between the javas & the spauldings or the blues ..except in the ones i purchased already grown..which it was obvious they had very little or no human interaction.

We got the word on Monday the eggs were on the way! They are coming from Texas so they should be here today. I have been thinking nice thoughts of the USPS all week.

We have some of our own IB eggs due to hatch in about two weeks, we are looking forward to some baby pea's running around again.

Got the eggs yesterday, they appear to have made the trip just fine. They are resting now and will go into the 'bator this afternoon. I have them propped up on a pillow, with a cold drink, and the TV remote, they should get a good "rest" that way.

Hey Steve I just listed 3 high % green hens on the Other Fowl Sale page! If your eggs don't work out I have adult hens for you!

I love the greens but have to cut back and lost my 15/16 Java cock last winter so I have decided to let the hens go.

Yes, they are flakier than the blues but no more than my whites are! They also seem more territorial and make life hard on "newcomers" to the pen (that's why one has a naked neck at the moment!)

Thanks Val. It looks like 3 of the 6 eggs are developing! I will keep you in mind though. We have some of our own IB eggs in the hatcher now, looking forward to some baby pea's running around soon.

Stopped turning the eggs today, 3 did develop, 3 were "clears" . We also ordered 4 chicks and the breeder emailed us yesterday that they were on the way! How's that for timing? We have been going back and forth for 3 years now as to get them or not. I think Sharon finally got tired of me whining about it and said to "get them already"
