just curious

Oh, yes! It moved, opened and closed it's beak, opened it's tiny wings, had some breathing movements. It died very quickly.

I tried hard not to be too upset as several kids were watching.

. They were older kids (part of our alternative school) and they were very protective of the more sensitive kids, wouldn't let them in to see!

The more scientific kids were fascinated that such a complete life developed right under their noses only 10 days after setting! There was good and bad in that, for sure.

It was out of an olive egg, very hard to candle, and had a faint stink to it. I guess the odor came from the shell, unless there was an insidious infection brewing that hadn't killed it yet.

From now on, I'm going to leave all questionable eggs!

Thank you everyone...you're all so supportive. This is only my second hatch so I'm still learning A LOT. I didn't realize how hard it would be to have an "accident". My last hatch had a late quitter after lockdown, I broke it open to see where everything went wrong just so I would know for the future. Then this hatch had an early quitter, same I broke it open to learn, but with both of those I accepted that nature had decided to take that course and that something must not have been right with the babies. This one breaking was completely our fault and that's hard to accept. My 2 yr old told me before bed tonight that she's not going to break anymore open because they bleed and it hurts them, so I think she gets it to a point that's good enough for a 2 yr old to understand. I agree with you skitz, it's so important to let the kids be involved with this whole process...I just hope something like this doesn't EVER happen again. Thank you again everyone

And accidents can happen to anyone. My friend babylady4 from here was my "saraget hatcher" for my first bunch hatched. While we were candling around day 16 or so, she dropped the flashlight on 2 of my eggs. One cracked just a little and the second was cracked pretty good but no juice coming out. She was sssoooooo sorry that it happened. I told her accidents happen and it wasn't a big deal. She felt horrible. She knew I paid a lot for those eggs and they were to be for my 4yr old.

Well- we dipped the cracks in unscented white candle wax and hoped for the best. We candled them again that night and one was moving and the other not so much.

The one with the small crack hatched and the one with the big one, did not.

So it can happen to anyone. We live and learn and live some more.

I did invest in a flashlight that has a strap on it to go arond your wrist though.
