emergency advice needed

my cockerel has been acting weird for the last three days. he doesn’t move when I walk over to the pen, he hasn’t appeared to be eating and today i noticed that he has lost a significant amount of collaring on his waddle, and when I picked him up he shook his head and left a huge snot trail on my hand after which he proceeded to sneeze continually.

what should i do.

Agreed, definately get him away from the other birds.

It could be a couple different diseases or conditions.

Newcastle? If its exotic newcastle disease, you may be too late for isolation to help your other birds. If you have swelling of tissues around the head, I'd say call your local vet or state vet. You can call 1-866-536-7593 to get a local number. Oh, and wash yourself well every time you go near your birds. Especially if you intend to go near anyone elses.

Sorry about my jumping to a conclusion here. I just got info from the state about END and AI since my birds were tested. The mucous pics in the diagnostic aid have rather stuck in my mind.

thanks for the replies everyone.

I’ve isolated the cock now and will keep you posted.

in hindsight i should have signed up for this website the first day i got the chicks. I’ve been reading up but this website doesn’t have a vaults or any place with all of its really juicy info stored so I have been struggling to find the info Im after.

i thought i was looking after them realy well untill i read those commandments lismrog posted.

ive constantly inspected them for mites and lice
i always give them fresh water/ and food.
There run has sealing ventalation.
the coop has been fortified within an inch of rationality.

i dont think this looks good. when i was carrying the wee little fella over to the newly built isolation centre. i noticed that he was drooling ALLOT.
he barley could run away from me and this one was a runer.
he couldent stand and his wadle was all blue.

im going to give it a day and then call a vet.

should i be worried about interspecies contamination. I remember the bird flue scares and it has been a secondary concearn while I have been caring for him.

I am also a super-newbie, and i have been reading my eyes off trying to learn a lot fast. I found the Frequently Asked Questions section to be very helpful for general information. If you go all the way to the bottom, there are several archived threads about chicken food, behavior, and sickness.

It was also recommended to me (which i haven't done yet) to buy Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. I am told it will answer questions you didn't even know you have.

If his comb and wattles are blue.....it's because he is hypoxic, which means his oxygen level in his blood is LOW! He is probably suffering
Hypoxia causes shortness of breath, which is a HORRIBLE feeling.
Can't you get him to a vet........sooner rather than later?
Poor little guy..........hope he gets better...
