Emergency! Baby chicks dying...possible botulism?

Wow I read that shredded cheese was a great treat for chicks!!! But I was trying not to give too many new things at once...will check out those links, thanks!!!

Are all of those foods safe for chickens to eat? Mushrooms? Almonds? Fish??

I know chocolate, coffee beans, potatoes (skins) avocado and beans are toxic, what else?

There's are lists on BYC of both good treats and things to avoid with chickens. Almonds and fish are okay for adult chickens. But you have baby chicks, right? Believe I'd hold off on those for a while - but that's just me.

My chicks aren't babies anymore at 12 weeks but I still strictly limit the amount and type of treats they get. I don't want treats to reduce the amount of chick feed they're consuming as I don't want to create a protein or vitamin imbalance. The only treat my chicks received when they were weeks old was a bit of mashed boiled egg, which they love.

Thanks!!

Btw Bindi is now trying to walk here and there!! I think sensation is returning to her legs! :) none if the other chicks came down with her symptoms and I have real hope she will recover from this!!

I`m so happy for you that your babies may be on the mend. We get so attached to them. I have a sick little one now, and its heart breaking.
Good luck with your babies.

WOW, so glad the surviving one is doing better

I have 3/ 4 day old chicks, (as well as 3/5 wk olds and 7 / 1 yr olds),,,I give the babies, and adults at times,
their food made into a mash with warm water...They love it, and the babies get it as a treat, it's their reg crumbles but mashed with warm water..

Thanks Diane :) my chicks will eat their feed like crazy if I put it on a separate little dish...it's just the novelty I think!
