One of my Silkie hens--3 or 4 years old--was out in the pen this morning with a red thing about the size of a marble sticking out of her butt. It is 25 degrees this morning. I brought her in, and turned on a 100 watt bulb in one of my empty brooders, filled the sink with warm water, and cleaned up her back side, got a small dish of vegetable oil, and tried, with my finger, to put the thing back. She keeps straining, and by oiling and inserting my finger, I can feel an egg, about 2 inches in. However, there is skin/innards of some sort between my finger and the egg. The opening is the one in the center of the red ball, which I assume is the egg duct, but finally, by careful probing, found another, which had bits of poo in it, so feel that I had the right place.
What can I do to help her? Is there any more I can do to get the egg moving? She is currently warming in the brooder, as I thought maybe heat would relax her. (She can move away from the heat, tho, if she wants to.) Any help appreciated. Sure hope someone is on here on New Years Day. Thanks.
