Emergency! Hen badly wounded.

I looked more carefully and I think the ball is what is left of her crop. It looks like there is food (grass, pellets etc) hanging out of it.
The vet is closed today.
I can apply some vetericyn, but I am quickly coming to the realization that I can’t save her. :hit
Sorry, but I think that is the best option for her sake! Hugs.

So sorry that she was so badly injured, but you are doing the best for her. Have you had time to look for where the predator got inside the coop? Predators usually come back the next night, if they are successful.

Thank you and yes. DH and I will be checking over every inch of the coop and run later to verify that everything is intact. But I am afraid what happened was due to an entirely preventable human error. Our coop has multiple doors to allow for easier cleaning etc. It looks like one of them got left open last night. I feel horrible that my mistake cost Amelia her life. But I know I am lucky that the other birds are ok.

This is my first ever predator loss, and the first time I have had to cull. It sucks. More than I can possibly describe. But I am very grateful to this community for giving me the support and guidance I needed in order to quickly come to the right decision. To all those who replied: you have my heartfelt thanks. :hugs

I am so sorry you are going through this. I went through the same thing just last week and for the same reason. :hugs:hugs:hugsIf it wasn't for the support of all of the great people on this site I don't know how I would have gotten through it. My husband was out of town so it was left on my shoulders to put her down. I cried so hard, but I knew I was doing what was best for her and so are you. We are human and we make mistakes, don't beat yourself up over it. She was loved and well cared for and I'm sure she knew it. My little Marty will be there to play with her and keep her company:love If you have or can get a trap I would set it and trap the thing that got her. I did and it took about 2-3 nights to trap the stupid skunk, but we did and now he's now longer alive to tell his chicken killing stories. Again I am so sorry for your loss :hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs
