Help! My hen is lethargic. She has been this way since last night. She is 8 months and has never layed an egg. I do not know the name of her breed. She is mostly white with black on her head and tail with feathers on her feet.

She has not been eating or drinking that I know of. She was laying on the floor but I moved her to the nesting box and she hasnt moved since.

She is in my barn now because it is slightly warmer (not as much wind chill). She looks like she is trying to lay an egg or is being broody but she wont walk at all or do anything.

I felt for an egg but I'm not sure if I felt one or not. Is she egg bound? What should I do? Help!

Hello, Please do a search on "Eggbound". I did this a week ago because my hen, "Mama" was not herself. From all the symptoms described, I thought Mama might be eggbound. She wasn't moving around much, not eating, not talking, etc. She'd only been laying eggs about a week. I brought her in, gave her warm baths, put olive oil into her vent, kept her quiet, dark room, etc. She never passed an egg, but she did pass some strange plantlike poop. However, she started eating, drinking, talking just like herself in about 2 1/2 days. There are lots of chicken lovers out there who have lots of experience to pass along. I am very thankful to all of them. I hope your girl feels better soon, and you too!

... and what is the temperature in your barn? Moving the bird to a warm environment often helps... your barn might still be too cold for a bird that is in severe distress.

My barn is still cold but it is -warmer- then the coop. I cannot move her inside because the dogs and cats would stress her more (even in a cage in a closed room because my dog can open doors)
