Hey y'all. So I went out to the chicken coop before school and found Phenix my favorite little girl out in the run by herself. All the rest of the chickens were in the coop. She was sitting down with her head bent down and she was shaking. I picked her up and she didn't move or make any sounds. I brought her to my mom and I noticed that her left side of her head was swollen and her eye was only half open. I really didn't think she was going to make it but I put her In a cage and put some probiotics in her water. This was definitely one of the slowest days of school ever after I went straight to her cage and checked on her she was about the same when I looked at her. When my dad got home he went to check on her. he felt her crop and her whole body trying to see if she was hurt. But she never moved or said anything. I finally convinced my dad to bring her inside. She still just sitting there. She did eat a little tho. I'll post pics shortly.

I'm sorry to hear that Phenix is not doing well:hugs
Do you think she was outside all night?
How old is she?

When you can, photos may be helpful.
Swelling on the side of her head, can you tell if she suffered an injury? Any wounds or scabs, was she picked on by the other chickens?
Is the eye swollen too, do you notice any pus or discharge coming from the eye?

It's good that you were able to convince Dad to let you bring her in so you can care for her. Encourage her to drink, she may be hydrated.

Hopefully we can give you more suggestions when we see the photos and you can tell us a little more about what you think happened to her.

Here's some pics. She was one of my 4h chickens this year so she's only 8 months old. She wasn't very cold when I found he so I don't think she was outside all night. She didn't have any discharge coming from her eyes and she doesn't have any scabs.

Is she more responsive this morning?
Is she still shaking or has that gone away?
She may have gotten a peck to the eye or something in it. Flush it with some saline and apply Terramycin eye ointment in the eye. If you notice a discharge, then try to keep that cleared away.
If the swelling doesn't go down in a couple of days or she has other symptoms then it may be a respiratory illness.
I would also check her for lice/mites.

Encourage her to drink and eat her normal food.
I hope she gets better quickly.

If she has crust or drainage around her sore eye, clean it off with a warm wet compress. If you cannot get the Terramycin eye ointment at your feed store, you may substitute plain Neosporin ointment, just a small dot into the eye twice a day. Sometimes it is hard to tell if they have a respiratory disease, or if they have been pecked in the eye. If you see eye bubbles in the eye, it might be MG, a respiratory infection. Offer her some chicken feed made runny with water, and give her a few bits of cooked egg.

Ok thank you. She's still shaking her head but her body stopped shaking.

Was she in at night? Were others locked in coop? Or did something attack and the rest ran inside? Eating and warmth are good

Can you take a video of her? Post it to youtube then provide us a link.

Shaking the head, just in case, look in her ears for any infection and check her good for lice/mites.
Make sure her crop is empty in the morning before she eats/drinks too.
It won't hurt to give her some poultry vitamins for a couple of day if you have those.
