Hello - My two year old easter egger hen was somehow very seriously injured. We aren't sure how, but suspect the other chickens may have pecked at her. The back of her head/neck is extremely bloody and all the feathers are gone.

We aren't able to find a vet in our area that treats chickens. We are thinking of setting her up a medical pen but need all the advice.
1) Is the injury bad enough that it would be more humane to put her down?
2) Is there some sort of medicine we should try and apply to her wound to help keep it clean?
3) Would her medical pen be best outside where she is used to being or are we better off putting her in a warmer space. Low tonight in our area is in the 30s.
4) Anything else to keep her as comfortable as possible?

Thank you so much! We've had chickens for three years but this is our first injury/death so this hits hard.

Do you have a rooster? That looks like she was attacked by a rooster or other chickens. Can you get Vetericyn wound spray at your feed store? 2% chlorhexidene or saline works well too, to spray on twice a day. Then apply plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a daily to keep it from drying out. Offer fluids and food. Are her eyes damaged? Can she see? The antibiotic ointment can be used in the eyes as well.

Treat for shock as the number one
step. Give warm Gatoraid or mix a half
teaspoon of sugar into a fourth of a cup
of warm water with a pinch of salt and
baking soda. Have the patient drink it all
or syringe it into the beak, and bring
them in to a quiet warm place.
Flush the wound well with saline. this
is better than soap and water as it
maintains the PH of the tissues. But
warm soap and water will do. You need to wash away any bacteria from the wound. Bring her inside to a warm calm place to recover. When this happened to my hen after cleaning, I sprayed with vertricyn plus and then applied Vaseline. I done this for a few days then when it started to heal, I put her back in the run in a dog crate, on a see no touch basis, I sprayed with vetricyn twice a day and applied the blue cote spray.

Thank you for the advice! Got her wounds cleaned up and she's safely tucked away in the laundry room. She drank some Gatorade out of a syringe and was standing and looking around. I have hope for her! Really appreciate everyone's advice!

How is she doing? The same thing just happened to one of our girls and I'm following the above advice. Were you able to get her to drink right away or did you do Syringe?
