My husband came in this morning and told me one of the chickens was listless, then he told me he noticed yesterday that the bird might have been acting sick because she let my 4 year old pet her and didn't run away.
I turned her over and there were clearish worms or maggots or something under her "vent". (it was pretty disgusting) Then I had to go into the house and find my vet's number - after about 1 minute he came in and told me she died.
My chicken is a bantam chochin and probably about 30 weeks old. I had 6 chickens - now - 5. We're taking the dead one and a live one to the vet this afternoon. The vet will creamate the dead one.
They have been in the yard, I'm sure they are eating earwigs, worms and whatever else they can find. I also give them layer pellets - what else should I do?
We're cleaning out their coop, giving them fresh dirt in their run, and having them checked - but I'm scared I'm going to lose the rest!
I guess they can't be in the yard anymore?
What about the kids? They were petting them?! I forgot to mention - she wasn't skinny by any means - my girls are very healthy looking - this seems like it took her quickly - before she could show signs of emaciation.
Help?!
