I have a 4yr old Barred Plymouth Rock hen and she had something like a hard egg yolk hanging out of her vent last night. I soaked her in a tub and it fell off but she has something that is purplish to brown that looks like a organ still hanging out. It would not go back in. The egg yolk thing was attached to it. I tried taking pictures but it won't let me upload them. It is now bleeding .it's more like clotting out. Does anyone know what it could be? I have heard they try to expell their ovaries when they are done laying but idk. She is eating and drinking. Please help .we lost her sister out of the blue three months ago after we lost three human family members and had two in hospital recovering from gunshot wounds. I can't loose another family member (even though she is an animal she is family)... I'm at a loss....

Pictures would really help. She may have a reproductive issue or a vent prolapse, but without pictures it's very hard to say. If you still have the object that came out of her vent pictures of that too. If you save the pictures on your device/computer you should be able to hit "upload a file" on the bottom of the box you type in and add them to your post.

Wow, so sorry for your loss. :(

Sounds like you could use some good old fashioned BYC love and support! :hugs

My first thoughts on your hen would be either vent prolapse or a lash egg that is stuck in the vent. No hens do NOT expel their ovaries after they quit laying. All birds that age will quit laying during winter months while they molt... which is lose old feathers and replace with new ones. They often start laying again as daylight lengthens.

Did you try using that photo button that looks like a mountain with the sun to upload your pics... that really will tell a better story if possible.

Hang in there! :fl

The picture below shows a prolapsed cloaca or vent. If theat is what you are seeing, the red tissue must be kept moist with honey or oil to keep it from drying out and dying, until the prolapsed tissue can be pushed back inside.
You may have seen a lash egg (flesh colored material that is a product of infection in the oviduct) or a collapsed egg membrane from shell-less egg. With a prolapsed vent, some use honey, hydrocortisone cream, or hemmorrhoid cream to help reduce the swelling. Here is a pucture of a typical prolapsed vent, and a good article on treatment:

Here is an article about lash egg material in case that is what you saw:

I can't figure out how to make my photo smaller to post but our friend who works for the FDA (goes to chicken farms) said it is her ovary. And what is still hanging outside is the tube. It is really interesting because there isn't a lot on this subject at all on the internet. We have two options 1 of course cull her and 2 keep her clean(bathed) and hope it takes care of it's self.
I want to thank everyone for trying to help. Im of course going to try to keep her with us as long as possible .if she looks like she is stressed in any way, shape or form we will put her down. But thank you again everyone

****UPDATE*******
I posted a few mins ago but wanted to let people know that our friend came by and it is NOT her over. It's a lash egg. He said their over can come out but that is not what's wrong .Unfortunately I am going to have to put her down because we found one about 3 weeks ago in the coop but didn't know who had laid it .But now we know and it's her second one in three weeks .I just wanted to let y'all know it's not her ovary. Thank you everyone. I also wanted to let people know on my original post I stated I couldn't upload the pics . I will figure out how to make my photos smaller before I have another question. Thank you everyone..
