In the Brooder
My pekin is going to be a year old in April. I got her when I was in college because we would eat a lot of eggs. When she was about a month old we noticed she wasn't using her leg. Looking closer, her toes had curled and it was at a strange angle. I've never owned a duck before so I was doing my best to research what might have happened. I switched foods thinking it was a deficiency, it didn't get better. Forums were saying her leg might possibly be broken. With me being in college I didn't the money for a vet bill. It was towards the end of the school year so I did my best to help her while I waited it out to get home.
When I got home she was doing amazing. Her leg was in the same condition but she was able to hop around. Her feathers were growing in nicely, she was happy. I did noticed her eyes were getting foamy, I would wash them everyday to try to keep it clear. I looked stuff up about it and ended up finding respiratory issues. My grandma was raised on a farm so i asked her if she could look at her leg. She messed with it and ended up telling me its dislocated. She would have replaced it herself but I think it hurt the duck when the leg got to a certain point.
I ended up taking her to the vet, and all they did was wrap everything under her ankle and told me it happens with growth. They didn't say anything about dislocation. They gave me a pain medication that lasted three days and then a respiratory medication.
Fast forward to when I had to go back to school, she wasn't able to walk around as much since it was in the city. My boyfriend and I did our best to keep them clean and healthy but she seems to be taking a turn for the worst. I called other vets in the area and they refused to see her because her leg had sat like that for too long.
Now her good leg is getting a giant sore on the bottom of it and the ankle seems to be swollen. She isn't using it as much and I'm scared. My mother told me it might be time to put her down, and I voiced the same concern to my boyfriend. He isn't exactly on board with the idea and wants to try making a shoe that might take some of the pressure off of it.
My main concern is I don't know how to help. No local vets will treat her and I don't have the money for a specialist. Should I just let her rest peacefully or try to make something for her?
*We also have a mallard and they have been inseparable since we got them. If the pekin needs to be put down, I'm worried how the mallard will handle it.
