Use an umbrella to protect you while helping the bird. I was 12 when I helped my mom rescue a baby blue jay and I still vividly remember that peck one the top of my head by the daddy jay. The umbrella worked great, just don't open it right next to them because it may scare them like it does my chickens. An open umbrella isn't really scary but a opening one is terrible.
