Had a big thunderstorm here this afternoon and when I got home I found a poult that was out of the pen. It's wing is badly broken - bone sticking out at the first joint by the body.

It is 5 days old.

Is there any hope of a decent recovery or should I cull? I raise turkeys for meat - not pets and I am not home all day to care for it. The only crazy idea I have would be to amputate?

Only sure way to prevent osteomyelitis in the future would be to remove the humerus entirely (snip away ligaments at `ball' joint, then superglue edges of skin together over opening. Need to be as sterile as possible and add an antibiotic to water (keep separated out for several days. Since it is very young the chances of recovery are pretty good. Use a good quality antiseptic spray (no `caine' pain killers) on wound area after closing.

If you are selling them for meat, I'd just put it down, will not be nicely `symmetrical'. in its development.
