Emergency! Sick hen! Any help would really be appreciated.

I think mine might have egg yolk peritonitis. She's really lethargic today, but she ate a little bit of melon this morning, and she's pooped twice. Just a little while ago she was making cooing noises in her box and I went over to her and gave her some pets. Her pupils kept dilating, which was odd. And then she laid down. I gave her more pets and some water and left her alone.

This sucks. Her poop resembles the poop from a chicken with peritonitis on the page with all the poop (http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=17568.0).

Sad.

On that third link, look at the years the quotes were taken. It's unfortunate that the most common information we read is only 50-100 years old
Yes, it is unfortunate that the references are old, but at least they had the money and education to do all those studies down through the years. They seemed to keep meticulous records back in those days. Even in "Diseases of Poultry" a lot of the illnesses and studies done years ago are still important. The molds probably haven't changed that much in 50-100 years.

Well, I thought Cream was actually better today. She ate small amounts throughout the day, stood up quite a bit, and seemed perkier. Her breathing was better, too.

But tonight, that all changed, and I think it was my fault. I thought she needed more food before the night, so I syringe fed her some Kaytee baby bird food. That really stressed her out, and now she is breathing heavily, with whistling noises as she exhales. I feel absolutely terrible about doing this to my poor bird. It is really heartbreaking to watch her struggle.

Sorry about your hen. Hopefully she didn't aspirate. Respiratory problems are always worse at night, so don't feel bad. Do you think tube feeding would do more harm tomorrow?

She died last night. I don't think she aspirated, just got too stressed out. Poor Cream, she was a good little hen.

Sorry for your loss. Do you plan to get a necropsy done?
Thanks. No, I don't plan on getting her necropsied. I could do it myself, but I don't have the time, and it costs too much in my area to get it done by someone else. I plan on keeping a close eye out for any signs of mold, or other birds with respiratory problems.
