EMERGENCY.....Suspect Blackhead disease How do I treat? Can I treat?

Hi All,

I am new here, and also new to Chickens. i came across this post looking for help with one of my girls. We have something like this on one and have no clue what it is. From reading some of the above posts I realize i do not know nearly enough about my girls. (these were my nephews chickens, he was recently killed in a drivers ed accident, and I want to keep his chickens for him ;'( )

I realize now I have lots to learn!!!

Sorry it isn't the best pic

Thanks

Barb

I would try to take another photo and post it since I can't see the problem that well. It looks like it is pretty close to the earlobe. Are there scabs anywhere else (comb, wattles or face?) Picture taking of chickens is really hard to do, but it helps to see what you see. Sometimes having another person hold the chicken helps. Here are some links about fowl pox to read in the meantime:

Got a better picture, and now it is bleeding... She is eating and drinking well. Should I separate her from the other chickens?

No other scabs or lumps/marks anywhere

My rooster hasn't been crowing like he normally does and today I noticed that I could hear some little noise in his breathing. He is eating and drinking good, he is 6 months. Any suggestions?

I can't say that it looks like pox. She may have been injured, pecked, or she could have scratched at her ear if there were pox scabs. Pox scabs shouldn't be distrubed because the virus can spread. I would clean her with weak betadine, peroxide (only once) or soap and water. Then apply some plain antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn twice a day. Make sure flies are not a problem, since they can deposit maggot larvae, and make it worse. When it dries and heals a bit, BluKote may be useful to hide the red.
