Emergency!!

Quote:
For one, he's probably cold, if he is alive. He's not going to move much if he's cold.

1. Moisten the membrane with warm water.

2. Let the bird warm up in the incubator! Leave him alone for a while.

3. Check in an hour or two. Moisten, gently prod to see if he is stiff or if he moves. Then put him back and let him warm up.

Post back here with results.

KlaHaYaGardens --> I am impressed by your obvious knowledge and desire to help. BenAnnaMama --> I want to encourage you to post a picture and take full advantage of the help that's being offered. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the chick!

Thanks everybody! I just feel like an idiot... I had lost hope on this batch and didn't see movement or the shape of a chick ready to hatch. All I saw was the air sack and the rest of the egg was a huge dark shadow. I just thought it was filled with blood and we proceeded to do the eggtopsy. We were so excited when we saw movement but scared at the same time... I wish i never snipped the membrane now... Well I wish I didn't break the egg to begin with. Curiosity killed the chick I guess... I'm still holding out hope. It will be a miracle if he lives! I hope if he lives, it isn't a rooster so I can keep her!

I'll keep moistening and prod now and then and otherwise leave her alone to hatch...

Eggcellent!

When she is ready, you may need to help pull the membrane off where it has stuck. That should only be where the shell is not covering it. If you're lucky, this exposed area isn't near her head.

Give it a an hour or two or three and check again. But, let it warm up.

The beak will be somewhere a little above the half way mark if you drew a line around the egg. It will be closer to the aircell side tip of the egg. It will also be tucked under a wing so you will only find the tip of the beak. You can peel the shell only carefully away to pop the top off without tearing the inner membrane. You can see the 2 different layers if you pick tiny pieces of the shell off at a time. DO NOT MESS WITH the MEMBRANE part while doing that. Then you should be able to locate the beak area by slowly rubbing a wet finger along the membrane. You don't want to moisten the membrane with big drops of water, just a dampened q-tip works great. You don't want to drown the chick. When moistened you can see where the blood veins are on the membrane. If you see blood don't go any further. In time the blood flow will start to leave the membrane and you can work on it more. You will know when it is time to pick away a little more membrane when you don't see veins in the area you have open. If you run into more blood., STOP! Put it in the incubator with a small piece of moistened paper towel or something to keep it moist. It can be saved but it is a slow hard process to slowly pick it out. I hope you can find the beak area for it.

It won't move much sometimes so don't panic.

Wow that is so hard to explain in writing. I hope some of that made sense.

I could totally explain it in person a lot better.

No kidding.

If I were there I could totally help you get the little booger out! I have helped many chicks hatch, because of mess ups with humidity in my incubator. I have had a lot of them make it and do great so don't give up hope!!
