You need to be doing all this at the large end of the egg, start at the large end (where the air cell is) And peel off a bit of the egg, you will see the air cell. Your best bet to doing this right and using a toothpick and having a bowl of warm water and hold the egg in a paper towel for gripping so you dont accidently drop it...Believe me the first time i did i was shaking so bad i almost dropped the egg cuz it was wet from the water.
Ok, thanks for the help but just for clarity this hole was not done intentionally per se. Well it was done when we thought there was a dead fetus inside. So this is what we are left with. I'm trying to leave it alone for the most part but really can't resist the urge to help it! This is my first hatch experience so I'm not sure how much to intervene. The majority seems to think it best to leave it alone.
Thanks for posting the pic. I can see the beak, do you see it? There is a bit of egg shell "pointing" at it. That's where you want the beak to be exposed.
If you can make sure it has air, isn't cold, and isn't bleeding out, you can probably save it unless it has a defect that you are unaware of.
Moisten that membrane again, and get it back in the bator.
Has it moved, such as when you poke it, or is it stiff?
If you keep it warm, breathing, etc., it can survive a few days like this. Give it the time it needs to be strong, etc.
I agree with the previous poster. It is best to start at the large end of the egg where the air cell is because it is likely the first place your chick will pip and try to breath. You probably won't find his beak at the small end of the egg, unless he is breach, That is where his butt is supposed to be, lol!!!
It doesn't look like your cihck is quite ready to hatch yet, I see a lot of veining in the membrane. Keep it moist with warm water when you take him out to check on him. Its impossible to give you a time frame on how long this chick has before he needs to be out, a lot of it is guessing. For now start chipping away on the large end and stop if you see blood. Once the chick begins to breath air the blood vessels will recede from the membrane and the yolk will start to abosrb. WARNING this is a long process! It takes several hours, or even a few days, from when a chick internally pips and begins to breath air to when the chick hatches. Good luck and patience!!!
OMG you poor thing. I am new and do not have an answer for you, but I did that to a tiny serama egg that was 5 days old. I thought it was dead. The heart was beating. I felt so awful. I hope this works out for you.
I'm sorry. I had one that I thought was a dud too but it was still alive. It died. I think it was because I interfered so much. Anyways I'm sorry about your chick.
