Emma's SICK!! HELP!!

Thanks for the info on the molt. It did seem her sister breezed right through it. Can she die from molting? She just doesn't want to eat. I've been putting scrambled egg in her mouth which she gobbles right down.
Any suggestions on what antibiotic to give her? Just in case.

I wouldn't give an antibiotic unless you know it's a particular illness that can be treated with a particular antibiotic. It seems like Speckledhen (maybe) had a hen die after a hard molt. I doubt it's the molt itself that kills, but it takes a lot of the bird's resources. You might want to give her some Enfamil Poly-vi-sol. Three drops on the beak twice daily. When you worm, repeat it 7-10 days later to kill any new hatches.

Hi good morning. This morning Emma was pretty much the same. We fed her some eggs with a little dirt and vitamins mixed in. She wanted to eat. They we put her back in the cage in our home to rest. She continued to stand with her head low and wings outstretched.

Just now (an hour later?) I checked on her and she is on her back! Her wings are laying out to her sides, her eyes are open, she seems to be breathing ok, but when I approached her she didn't move accept turn her head a little.

What's going on? Is she worse now? Is she resting (because it looked so hard for her to stand like she was standing before). I left her alone, but is there something else I should do now? help.

ok...I just heard a noise from the room where Emma is and went in and she was in a different position (like she flopped and fell over again). I took her out and am now holding her in a towel. She is alert, but I don't know what's going on now with her.

My chickens have done this before, then eventually they just die. I'm sorry.

When my birds were dying from Avian Leukosis (and Coryza also, my flock had both) they would go through a few days of weakness, then seem to perk up, then have droopy wings and be lethargic, then perk up, then they would get droopy again and progress to the point where they can no longer stand, then they would die within a day.

what did you try to do for them??

I'm not giving up. Emma's sister was much worse once (completely lethargic, eyes closed, shallow breathing) and now she's fat and happy out in the yard.

I have tried lots of different antibiotics. The necropsy revealed that they still had cocci, despite multiple courses of Sulmet and Corid. Is possible that your bird has that? Mine weren't having bloody poop or anything, some of them just became lethargic like you described then died despite trying courses of Tylan 50, Sulmet, Corid, and Tetracycline, and vitamins, and hand feeding the sick ones to make sure their crops were filled every night. But some of my birds also had tumors (from the avian leukosis) and a lot of snot, so unless yours has cocci it's probably something different than the persistent diseases mine had when I got them. I hope she pulls through for you!!!! It's so hard when they don't make it.

I realized she fell over and couldn't right herself. poor girl. Now I have her lying comfortably in a little kitty bed. So, she's too weak to stand now, but she's not struggling.

I am still thinking it's a hard molt (and her first one) so we'll keep getting as much food and nutrients in her as we can and see if she can ride it out.

My fingers are crossed that she will pull through for you. It's so hard to watch them when they are sick like that. It puts you in a position where you just want to fix them, but feel so helpless all at the same time.

Emma's going to the vet today at 4:30. Keep your fingers crossed. She did eat a bit of corn eariler as well as some fresh chopped spinach. Did somemore mojo healing. BTY for whats it worth, the vet assistant said not a good idea to worm her now so we'll see what the vet says.
Keep you all posted. Thanks
