Hi guys, one of my chickens started laying eggs for the first time last week, I've never had chickens before so very excited, she laid one egg every other day for a feww days then one a day then two eggs for two days running, they were all perfect little eggs thou one was longish and had two yolks(don't know if that's relevant ) any way this morning , no eggs but she was running in and out of the coop talking lots more than normal and when I went to check on her this afternoon there was an empty rubbery egg shell that looked like a deflated balloon. I changed all three chickens to layers mash as soon as she started laying and been giving dandelion leaves and grass every day, is this something to worry about? Am I missing something or doing something wrong?! Please help, they are my babies and if she's ill I want to do something quick. So glad to have all you experts just a tap away:) thanks

Oh hold up! New discovery! Just went out to check on chooks and found a perfectly formed egg under the bedding, and what appears to be the insides of the rubbery empty shell, hard to see as has all bedding stuck to it but looks like clear membrane and goo , little bit looks yellow so now thinking it was a soft egg, but girls were eating bits of it so maybe it was whole at first and they pulled it apart. I've taken it out as not sure they should eat it especially asit was all stuck with wood shavings and shredded paper. Anyway now I'm wondering if this could be a first attempt by one of my other girls as they haven't started laying yet to the best of my knowledge! Is it normal for this to happen before they lay their first egg?

One of your girls laid a soft shelled egg. It happens. It is just a fluke in the plumbing...working out the kinks so to speak. Keep your eyes peeled for a real egg tomorrow.

Good luck.
