Hi guys, I'm new here. I was offered 8 chicks for adoption from a local farm. All's been well over the last 4 days but today I noticed that one of the chicks seems to be declining? I'm not sure if its a misinterpretation of behavior on my end but I'm starting to get really worried. It (unsure of gender and how to identify (they range between 19 to 23 days old) seems to be lethargic/sleepy and droopy eyed. It doesn't seem to be eating or drinking too much and it kind of stands alone and lowers its body into what looks like a sleeping position. Here are some photos of the little one as well as its stool (it's the only poop of theirs I could find) I did try to isolate it and I found that as soon as I put it in the box, it seemed to eat a little bit (still wont budge on the water though)

Don't be shy of constructive criticism, I'm very new to this and could use some advise and knowledge. Let me know what you guys think!

Welcome to BYC!

I'm sorry about your chick.

What are you feeding, I see pellets in the dish.

At that age I'd consider treating for Coccidiosis. You can find Corid at stores like TSC.
Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

In the meantime, I'd try giving drops of sugar water to see if she will perk up.

Hi, thank you for the reply!

Here's a photo of the feed I've been giving them.

I'm running down to the farm supply store now. Thank you so much for the advise. Just to clarify, it's 1tsp of sugar to 1qrt water right?

I use 1tsp sugar to 1 cup water. If the chick isn't drinking on her own, then give her drops of the sugar water. (1 drop at a time to avoid aspiration, it's tedious, but when lethargic, they will often only take a couple of drops every 1/2 hour or so).

Are you in AU? If so, then you probably won't find the name brand "Corid".
You're looking for Amprolium, likely you'll find Harker's Coxoid. If that's the case, then follow the dosing instructions on the bottle of Harker's.

Oh! Does that bag of chick starter have the ingredients listed? If it does, do you mind taking a photo and posting them?
Sorry for the late reply, I've had to keep a close eye on the little ones.

Of course, here's the ingredients of the previous feed.

Hi again, just thought I'd give you an update.

I went to a few different spots on Friday, got some crumble starter (Peters Chick Crumbles) and amprolium. I am in AU and unfortunately I couldn't find any stockists that had Harker's Coxoid. I was told this (photo attached) was the next best thing. She started her medication as soon as I got home and she's been put in isolation too. Her brothers and sisters have also been put on the same meds and I'm monitoring them as well. She's seemed to have regained some of her energy back although she does still experience moments of lethargy (photo attached). I've also attached a photo of her dropping (seems a bit better than the previous stool.)

I did notice something yesterday though, it looks like she is starting to develop a mild wry neck. Once she stood on her legs, her head did straighten but I fear now that it's started, it may only get worse. I'm starting to feel a little helpless and I'm unsure of what direction to take. I've been checking in on her bihourly but she still seems to feel lonely and spends a lot of time distress calling. I hate the idea of her feeling any pain and/or suffering and I'm desperate to provide her rectification, I'm just running out of ways on how to. Do you have any advise and/or suggestions on what I should do?

Also, do you know what isolation period is recommended for something like this? Some sources say 14 to 30 days. Others say as short as 24 hours.

Cocciprol is great, I forgot about it, it's Amprolium, same medication (active ingredient) as the Harkers and Corid.

Wry neck, she's twisting the neck or stargazing? Could she be adjusting her crop?

If you feel she's beginning with symptoms of Wry Neck, then start her on 400IU Vitamin E daily. A little egg will help with the uptake of E. Usually you would give B-Complex with the E, but since you started Amprolium, then hold off on the B-Complex until you finish the treatment.

Not sure what you mean by isolation period?
