Emu Egg Hatch-along

That is so precious. Animal instinct, dedication and care is so beautiful! I bet it was hard to take them from him to hand raise!
It's really amazing how careful he was with them. I didn't feel too bad about it since they probably wouldn't have survived the dead of winter and where he decided to sit (in retrospect I should have moved the eggs and hoped he stayed where I put them but alas, I didn't know!). I built a giant nest around him and trekked out to him a couple of times a day to check on him and see if there were any peeps. But he got the babies back when it warmed up and was a great dad even after a couple of months without them.

That's so neat be took them back! What a good boy!

I have only seen mandarins once before, but they didn’t *count* on my Ebird lists because they were “captive” 🙃 (though there was nothing holding them in, but I suppose they were in someone’s yard pond, lol!) They are just sooo cute though. Are the two white ducks in your picture Mandarins? Never heard of them being white but they look just like them. Goldeneyes are really cool, we saw a Barrows last year, which is rare for our area, but often we see commons in the winter months. Do you have a hooded merg male to go with the female in your pic? They are incredible. A year ago we lived in a house with a community pond in our backyard and saw almost every type of wild waterfowl there. You’re making me miss that so much. Just looking out the back window and watching all of the gorgeous wild ducks!

When we move again this year to a place with more property, I am tempted to build a pond and get some mandarins, however in reality even if I do build one, it probably won’t be enclosed (so I can hopefully have wild ducks coming) so mandarins won’t stick around 😔 I researched it last year but then kind of gave up on it. We will see though! Knowing now that you have a lot of breeding mandarins makes me want to re-open that dream. 😂 Also wondering if you have or have had buffleheads? I love them so much, they are so beautiful!
Haha! Yes they definitely can escape sometimes from other aviaries and zoos 😅
Yup they're white mandarins. I just have the two hens that one of my normal colored pairs randomly hatched one year, but I'm hoping I can get some white offspring from them. White is way more expensive than normal colored so they were kind of like freebies. The drakes are really cool looking, I hope I can hatch one from them this year.
The goldeneye are awesome. I'm trying to find a drake barrows for my hen this year, I lost two different drakes a couple years ago to west nile but somehow the hen was fine. They take 3-4 years to even color out so it was really disappointing to lose them. Yup I have a hoodie drake. He'll be 4 and looks excellent. I only found these two recent photos you can kind of see him in. I have to take more on my actual camera instead of just my phone.

I love the waterfowl so much. My life so far has centered around them and I'm guessing it will from here on out 😅
My parents always make fun of me because apparently my first word was duck 🤣

That would be cool! You just have to wing pinion them, haha!

I don't have any buffleheads, no. Hopefully someday. They're supposedly a bit more aggressive in captivity which is tricky here, I just have the one pen so anything naughty gets sold.

It's amazing how developed they are inside that egg - related, here is Fred hatching some of his babies. I had already collected the first chick. It's all so fascinating!
Awww that was so cute! The behavior of Fred was fascinating. Like Strawberry said, its beautiful to see them like that. He's so attentive. That one crawling under the straw was really bugging him, haha.

Tomorrow is technically day 21, but I weighed them tonight to see how they were looking and #1 is already 2 grams under where it should be tomorrow. #2 looks perfect, it was 310 and should be 309 tomorrow, it's been averaging about a gram a day so should be good. I'm not sure what's going on with #1.

When I knew we were close, I’d walk out and check on him regularly and whistle. One morning I whistled and Fred about jumped out of the nest - a chick peeped back and was wiggling under him 🤣
