Emu Egg Hatch-along

Pics
@MGG I had 1 more break through last night. 2 more working on it tonight.
I only turn mine 3 times a day, use room humidity, meaning I never add water 🤷‍♀️
I’ve always had excellent hatch rates.
I started out with 10 this year.
My friend wanted to incubate some, she just likes to watch them hatch 🤣. Then she gives them back after they get too big to be inside.
Unfortunately a friend of hers accidentally upset her incubator and 3 broke when they hit the floor. She was so upset. 💔
Yeah sometimes less is more when it comes to these things. I always like to try it by the books at least once, especially if I've never tried hatching them. I incubate in the basement so my RH is super low, like 10% if I don't add water. I love the shoestring method though, makes things so much easier.

Awww that stinks. I know the feeling though. Did her incubator break too?

They

I have no experience with that so really no clue! Sorry I am no help. Keep it in until 60 days just to be safe.

My egg (and the other one) is still in. The one is level now so the next week will tell the story. I am still not hopeful, but honestly hope it proves me wrong and makes me a believer in the "NEVER EVER WIGGLE AND STILL GO ON TO HATCH EMU CHICK!"

I hope yours proves us wrong too! Lol

I am skeptical since of the 9, almost 10 (including the last minute quitter) I've hatched, the wiggles have been VERY obvious. I am convinced people who say the non wigglers hatch don't stare at them like I do 🤣 🤣
Haha same! It'll be fun to see.
Yeah I've stared pretty good too :lau
I kept thinking I was seeing little wiggles or vibrations, but since they sound like they're way more obvious than that I don't think it was anything.
Fingers crossed regardless! Hopefully it hatches and is a boy, haha.

Time for an update. I set 3 local eggs on Monday morning. The other 2 replacement eggs well arrive Saturday so a potential of 5 more babies mid April.

The 2 females have found their forever home and went to live with a couple who love birds of all sizes! They have been sending me pictures and they will have a great life. I annoyingly vetted them out (I always do)🤣. They were picked up yesterday. I have been hearing phantom whistling all afternoon and evening. I kinda miss my little whistlers. However, they were getting big and pooping a lot and I was already planning their move to the great outdoors during the daytime this weekend. Now I don't have to and can focus on other farm stuff.
Awww awesome! I'm glad they'll be happy. It's always hard to part with babies, I get it. I don't know if I could do that 😅

I hope these eggs all hatch! Are you fitting them all in your NR 360?

Not yetttttt! USPS is being dumb and not updating, but supposedly they are in transit. The estimated delivery is tomorrow. I really hope they do make it tomorrow so that they don’t have to sit around all weekend!
Grr post office is so frustrating. I hope they make it today or tomorrow.

Okay everyone!! Update!!! I found a couple of Emu eggs locally and just picked them up!! And I also spoke to another lady who ships eggs and she is going to send me two next week… I haven’t ever hatched emus before but I have hatched tons of shipped chicken eggs, and I got really scared that if I only incubated the two eggs from FNF that I might end up with one hatching, and then not have a buddy for it. In my opinion that would be worse than none hatching just because I feel like every baby bird should have a hatchmate. So now I will incubate six eggs just hoping that I can get two babies. I know, I feel like an insane person. But I’m just going to go for it and see what happens!

So thankful to FNF for starting me on this journey. I never would have done it if not for her! I may end up with nothing by the end of it, but I’m just grateful for the experience!

I am planning to set the two local eggs tonight. The eggs from FNF are supposed to come tomorrow but they haven’t been scanned in the usps system for quite awhile so I don’t know if they are actually on track. If not then they may not arrive until Monday.

I also don’t know a whole lot about the local eggs that I picked up (he had been planning to put under the male if he went broody, so I don’t know how old they are.) The parents are standard color and I snagged a picture of them out my car window. I have the incubator warmed up and I plan to weigh the 2 eggs and put them in pretty soon.

Should I start a new thread or just continue on this one? I am happy to do it either way!!

Fun! So... what happens if all 6 hatch? You keeping them all?

Fun fact: a group of Emus is called a mob. You could have a literal MOB of Emus if you're successful!

If all 6 hatch… which I really really doubt, just based on shipped chicken eggs that I have gotten, then I will do gender testing for all and probably keep one of each gender, and rehome the rest. But I really don’t think I’ll have that problem, lol! Im still nervous that I will only have one hatch, even with 6 eggs.

And that is awesome about the mob, I had no idea 🤣

Thanks to @MGG and this tread, I went down the rabbit hole researching Emus. Thankfully I don't have the fencing for them or I'd be here with my own pair... the fencing has helped with my self control when I see other animals I want too. With a proper fence, I'd have a zoo!
