My husband has been trying to convince me to get a pair of emus for over a year. If we do get them, I want to ensure they have enough area to thrive and be happy.

Their enclosed area would be just over 1/4 acre shared with chickens and ducks. There is a chicken/duck coop and run within that enclosed area. Roughly half of the area is wooded. I have seen that a minimum of 1/8-1/4 of an acre is needed but I don’t know if that is too small. So the question is, is that enough space for a pair of emus?

Thank you!

Hi Mills! Welcome to the site. :welcome

I don't keep emus myself, but I wanted to try and find you some help. We don't seem to have much for emu articles and content.

@KsKingBee do you have any suggestions for how much space to give a pair of emus?

More is always better, we have three on 10 acres and another pair in a pen that measures 100 x 50 feet along with three rams and they are fine. It will depend on their personality if they will stay in a penned area, ours like to get the zoomies or the hen will get hormonal and chase one of the cocks over the fence. When they are calm they will stay in a pen with short fencing. In short, I would not keep them in less space that 100 x 50 feet.
