I know the nervous feeling all too well when you have one that’s just not hatching right! Dealt with this just the other day. If there are big blood vessels be extra extra careful not to rupture them. They can and will die quickly. That’s why assisting emus is so touchy.
With my last one, it was not positioned right to hatch properly on its own. So far it sounds like yours is going to make it out on its own. When I was assessing the membrane and vessel situation, I only had vegetable oil to make the vessels visible. It worked great and kept the membrane moist. Once the blood started to recede/dry up is when I opened the end by it’s bum to make sure the yolk was absorbed. Then I stuck it back in the incubator for another few hours so the main vessel could dry up. Checking on it often to make sure the membrane was not dried and stuck.
It never tried to make it out on its own and had to be completely assisted. Most would say to leave them and if they die, then it most likely had a problem that prevented it from making it. I strongly disagree with emus. The emu chick that I just assisted is just fine and like the others now. It’s leg was positioned in the wrong spot, along with its head to properly hatch in its own. It just took a few days to get its leg to slowly move to the right positioning to walk.
Good luck with the little one!
