It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

If it is winter and cold where you live, chickens are less likely to produce eggs. I recommend a heat lamp if you don’t have one but don’t leave any eggs, they’ll rot.

You can't make a bird go broody. You can get breeds known for broodiness, of course--silkies, game of any sort, buff orpingtons and cochins (especially bantams). Or you could buy or make an incubator. Here are some homemade incubators.
