Encouraging free range

There is a learning curve issue but genetics may play a role as well. They have been bred for many generations to tolerate a high degree of confinement. How that plays out when birds are free-range kept would be interesting to see when compared similar strains not so selected.
 
Then how do I keep my free range birds from going places they aren't welcome....my deck, garage, etc.
