End of the line?

So last week I called my vet and asked if they would see her. I knew it was a long shot because they pretty much only handle cats & dogs. As expected, they declined to let me bring her in.

I called again today just to see if they would be willing to give her a shot to put her to sleep. At first they declined to even do that.... She tried to tell me that it wouldn't help to give her a shot because it would still take 10 minutes to take effect and she would suffer. I told her I didn't understand how that could be the case because I've had them put down other animals (cats & dogs) in the past and they all went to sleep within a minute or two. Ten minutes seems a bit of a stretch. The vet tech said she would talk to the vet who "sometimes does these things from her home." She put me on hold for a few minutes and then came back to say that I could bring her into the vet's clinic tomorrow morning.

We are at the vet this morning. They gave her a sedative to make her sleepy before euthanasia. She is so peaceful right now. Sleepy but still standing up.

Sad day. DH thinks I'm silly for having the vet put her down instead of the ax. It just seems so cruel under the circumstances

Well, the sedative didn't work but then she was so sick that she didn't really put up much of a fight. We wrapped her in a towel and they administered the same dosage of the euthanizer that they would give to a 20 lb dog. (ETA - when they weighed her, she was only 3 lbs! :( ) She started convulsing for about a minute. It was really sad, but I don't think she was in as much pain and distress as she would have been if we'd just used the ax.

DH will burn her body later this evening. Even though she didn't have a name and I only owned her a short time (I adopted her from the previous owner of the house we bought), I still feel sad and hope she didn't suffer.
