plus I can't ask my hubby for another coop already.. LOL so I am hoping to build a couple JUST LIKE THE BLUE COOP in the spring... These look great in general, but I"ll use them for my lav orp and ameracauna houses when collecting hatching eggs.. isolation houses.. and I love how everything was laid out to not waste any lumber.

I'm so glad you like it, kassy! I have to admit it was really empowering to get it done all by myself.
Lauralou on here suggested the 3' width after building a number of them similar to this. She pointed out that it makes it a lot easier to reach and clean everything. Plus it means you can do it out of fewer sheets of plywood. I liked the idea of a "front porch" and indeed the chickens sit on it all the time. I will tell you that it has gotten dirty and poopy really fast. I scrape it and hose it down all the time.

One thing I didn't really think about was that the silly chickens would want to roost on the cross piece in the middle that connects the front to the back. Nevermind that there are three 3' roosts across one end. They try to cram three of them up in that tiny little triangle of space. I need to cut a piece of wood to block that off.

The other thing I didn't think about was the broody pen underneath being really hard to access. The 4' depth is too deep. Next time (and let's face it, we all know there will be another coop in my future at some point), I think I will split it into a 2' storage space from the back and a 2' deep broody pen in the front. My mama hen has started laying again and she laid the first couple back in the back of this pen (she was confined with the babies for the first week). It is a real pain getting down on my hands and knees to fish out eggs.

Other than that I am pleased as punch with it. Good luck making yours! I want to tear my other coops down now and make more of these.

Wow, the pages you all have constructed look like they took as much time as the coops!

Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge with us.

Kassy68 Rock on! Even though I am a guy reading your " woman power quote", I still say yoorah for a Michigan Coop Winner! We have alot less time to build ccops and runs, here, where it is winter 6 months of the year.

That is a wonderful coop. NIce job.

I am from Clare and will enter the contest if I ever figure out how to post pics to my BYC page....beleive me I have tried. I can send them in emails and print , etc , but not get them from my files to BYC...

Anyways, NICE JOB ON the COOP!!!!
