Epsom salt baths aggravating skin?

Hey,

I have been giving Hattie epsom salt baths for her infected foot and the past hour or so, she is constantly pecking at herself.

Do you think I have been using too much salt???

It's hard to say not knowing how much salt you are putting in a gallon/s of water. Are you soaking only her feet or the whole bird? You can always rinse after the salt bath. I think even for a human, it's like one or two cups for a bath full.

I use a long tub and it's about 1/4 of a bath full.
I put in about a cup full of epsom salt / sea salt... I think I am using too much. I will start rinsing her off int he shower.

Her feet and the bottom of her body gets soaked. My uncle who is a farmer has given me some spray called 'Engemycin'. It is for cattle, pigs and sheep but he said it's amazing stuff and spray it on her foot. I sprayed some on but hoping it wont harm her. Nothing else seems to be working so if the infection hasn't cleared in two more days, I will have to take her to vets to get it drained . :*(

Sounds like too much salt. The package mine comes in says 1 cup per bath.

Im sure she will be fine and you were trying to help. I think the plain warm water is a good idea for a bit.

Where is this foot infection? If it's bumble foot, you need to remove the core. Most common bumble foot is in foot pad but can be elsewhere.

Have you seen this method? It has worked well. I want to emphasize a few things first. She uses clear iodine, not brown iodine. She puts a little bit on the bumble and waits several days. The clear iodine seems to react with the bumble and forms a black scab. That scab can be soaked and then gently pulled - some of the material will come out - in this case, the plug, or core, came out with the scab after soaking. She did not have to cut the foot. Repeat. She did not cut the foot. It is not pus that can come out after lancing. It is chunky.

On July 1st, I found one of my Pekin ducks with what I would consider a bad case of Bumblefoot. Both feet were involved and I'm ashamed to say, the only way I found it was she was limping. One foot had 7 and the other had 3. I was able to grab her and bring her into the house and put her into a warm bath to clean and soak. Two water changes later and softened feet, all I had time to do was paint the bumbles with colorless iodine, grabbed the wrong stuff, and put her into a dog crate in my house until I could get everything ready to operate and get them gone. Did I mention the thought of this scared me half to death?

Sad to say it took 6 days before i was able to get everything together and someone to help out with the 'cure'. The following pictures are what we found after the bath we gave before the planned surgery to remove these things.




















As can be seen, there really wasn't much to operate on, even though I was prepared to do just that. No matter how much squeezing or prodding or soaking, there just wasn't anything more to come out, it was all on the scabs that were covering the sores. The swelling was down from the 'marbles' I saw when I first found them. I poured betadine over the ones I had opened and painted the ones that I hadn't again with the iodine and put her back into her crate with clean bedding.

the next pictures are of the same Pekin and anothe duck, Dottie the Mallard, who was also found limping.












As can be seen in the first two pictures, the bumbles have been dramatically reduced on the Pekin with just the iodine application and the smaller ones totally gone. The last four pictures are of the Mallard who is still under going the iodine applications.

As can be seen, this is how the left and right foot look tonight on the Pekin duck. The heels being the worst are still showing infection and need for more treatment. tomorrow, I will again give a bath and pull/cut out the scabbing and treat with straight iodine this time. These spots are now flat or as flat as they should be considering the part of the foot they are on. I will still touch up the places that had the spots before as well.

Awww bless her!

Did it really hurt her and did she quack in pain? I really don't want to hurt her her but it needs to be done!
Although, I guess it is a lot less painful than cutting!!

I can't see any scabs at all or black dots.. It looks like ab abcsess. Maybe the Iodine will show the scabs?




I think I am going to have to try this method I am going to go to the Pharmacy later on today.

It looks more like blisters to me - that is why I asked about how cold it is.(on the other thread, if I recall correctly) Frostbite looks like that sometimes.

Are there fire ants or anything like that where you are?

Anything that could cause blisters?
