I came home today and this little guy had escaped the brooder. Surprising since it did have a cover over most of it, and I never had that problem with my other set of chicks.

So, now he has a lovely new chicken wire cover for the house brood box, and I have 2 hands covered in cuts from that darn wire!

do you have any idea of where he got got and can we see a picture of you brooder?

Sure, I can post some pics a bit later. I always have problems trying to post them from the ipad.

I am using a large Rubbermaid tub for now, then I used a lid from a smaller tub to cover the side where the food and water was. I figured this would keep them from getting out by hopping up on top. (I have one that does this already) I am sure that is what he did. The other side of the brooder was uncovered so the heat light could shine in. This is the same setup I used with my last chicks and it worked fine until they were about 5 or 6 weeks old. These are only about a week old! But the escapee I think is maybe older looking at the feathering on him.

When we came home I took an old storm window frame and removed the glass, wrapped it with chicken wire and now the entire box is covered. No escapees and the light can shine in fine. I need to stop and pick up some duct tape today to finish wrapping the edges so the kids don't get poked on the wire, but this will do for now and I can finish the whole thing tonight.

it is not too great of a pic since I took it with my phone.

It doesnt need to look pretty, just needs to keep them in! I have plans to build a wall to wall brooding box out in the coop, but the husband is out of town and I really like his help and advice.
