I use essential oils, but I'm afraid that somehow my chickens and ducks will consume them. Does anyone know of any oils chicken and/or ducks certainly can or can't have?

I would not give my birds the chance to consume any oils besides vegetable oil and that would only be if I had to treat them for scaly leg mites or something. I am not sure what essential oils are but if they are not plant based I would assume they would not be to good for birds to eat. What do you use these oils for? How would your birds come in contact with them?

Essential oils are plant based, I'm not sure how they make it, but it's like the pure oil of a plant. I use it on my face, so two ways they consume it is if I touched my face then hand fed them, and my duck will kiss my face. It's weird I know but it's cute haha.

Well I don't think they would eat much of it from doing that and if it is meant to be put on a human's face then it should not be to dangerous. With such a small amount I don't think they would be harmed but I am not positive.

So what does the oil do? It seems kinda odd to put oil on your face, does it smell good or something like that?

I use lavender an coconut oil. Lavender helps removes acne (and smells really good), but by itself it can sting, so I mix it with coconut oil which takes away most, of not all, of the stinging. I love essential oils. They have so many organic remedies :)

That is nice, I know coconut oil is pretty safe around chicks, I think that is what can be used for keeping the membrane of a hatching egg moist if it is drying out and I am pretty sure that coconut oil is very safe to use around chickens. If it stings your skin then I guys try not to get it in the duck's eyes, I am sure they would not like that.
