Essential oils to prevent algae growth

Has anyone ever put essential oils in their chickens water to prevent / slow down the growth of algae? I change and scrub their waterer out every couple of days but the heat here just speeds up the growth. I'm not sure if it's safe for them to consume. Any thoughts?

I haven't heard of this yet, but I would be interested to learn anything about it if someone else answers your question.
