Establishing Spiral Breeding with a Single Related Pair?

Great breed in need of serious breeders like yourself . As you know they are behind the creation of Marans. If you need clarification on color breeding laws check out hathitrust digital library online. Click "full view" . Keyword search "breeding laws poultry Card" that is Wid Cards fab book. Keyword search able text. Great info on laws, not opinions

or theories. One of my fav texts. Judge Card had a gift for making breeding simple and could often be found at poultry shows with a circle of listeners expounding to them on the subject. Best,, Karen.

I'll have a read Karen. Thanks!

Whew, been reading up on this breed at Google advanced book search just now. They are like a super Sussex. Hens at 12 lbs. And cocks at 16 lbs. WOW. With a square body
Even Sussex are rectangular. What color do you have. I see they comy in black, white Cuckoo and a turkey headed variety which had to do with the shape of the comb n,as they Re not naked necks. But the head really does look like a trukey head! I was surprised how popular they were back in the 19 teens. I was just surfing : Malines breeding with 50 hits under poultry as the subject . Lots to read there. Looks like you have an exciting adventure ahead of you! Best, Karen

I'll be getting the cuckoo variety and very excited about it! The breed has been gaining momentum and I hope to make it easier for people interested in the breed to get started as they are currently quite hard to get in my part of the country.

The primary allure of the breed from my point of view is it's utility as a meat-type bird that can produce an impressive carcass in a single season. I've researched several other breeds and have not found any indication that there is a better alternative if the end goal is to produce a well-rounded carcass in less than 5 months from a heritage pure bred.

I was initially most interested in the turkey head but they don't seem to be available in Canada and from what I've been told by breeders in Europe they are still not as advanced as the standard Malines in regards to their utility as a meat bird.

I am just astonished at the size and quick finishing ofthis breed. Reading in the US, they keep writing Bout what slow growers they are. But when one reads the old lit it is the opposite. Massive, when was the last time one read that in a breed description. I think you have a special breed here. What did I read... Finishing to five lbs. In three months? Best, Karen

I just have to wonder how many people ..Not you... Are raising Malines without using a meatbird feed. I made that mistake initially with my sussex. The next generation I raised on Agway meatbird
Much better results. Like the Malines, the Sussex is also a meat breed. I am currently studying the commercial broiler industry to find better ways to raise both the Sussex and the chanteclers, both meat breeds. Best, Karen

There are several breeders here on BYC that got their starter Maline from Canada.
A search of Malines on this site will bring up those threads.
I have been interested in Turkey headed Maline for several years and have been visiting with several breeders.
One of the issues the breeder in Canada and I discussed was the difficulty in hatching the jumbo eggs produced by the Cuckoo Malines. Dry hatch seemed to give better results.

Reading those threads is what got me into the Malines in the first place. I read the "breed focus" on a whim and by the end of the day I was hooked! I've heard the eggs are pretty huge, similar to hybrid brown layers, so I'm going to try a back-to-back hatch of those while my Malines are maturing to see what works best with my setup.
