Went out again and found Nez biting the chicks again; this time I let the Super Soaker explain things to her.
For the chicks tonight may be a Nightmare, does that mean for Mrs. Nezbit it's been a "Wet" Dream... :thun
Sorry I couldn't resist that one.

Everyone has been quiet for a while now; I hope they stay that way

Tomorrow morning Colleen will have to decide how to deal with them.

Well, super soaker did Not teach Mrs.Nezbit anything.
This last time out I found her back over by the chicks and Esther was on the floor, I wasn't sure at first if she was alive.
The super soaker got Nez back in her spot, I looked at Esther and saw nothing obviously wrong and put her back on her roost.
I was planing on doing this down the road but, events have forced it now; I turned their night light off.

I'm pretty sure they can't see well enough to cause any problems now, but what happens in the morning, I'm not sure.

I'm also going to need to figure out something else to help keep preditors away.

I'm not sure if Iv'e mentioned this yet, but I'm pretty tired of this now.
I have spent alot of time trying to get these guys to get along and I've about had it.

I guess I'll start thinking up some more drastic measures to force them be friends.

Well, that is irksome!

I agree with keeping the light off. It seems like they all sleep better that way, anyhow, and there's less fighting.

Sounds pretty funny, but I've been thinking about getting a laser trip wire to surround my coop. They have one at www.thinkgeek.com for about $20---it has a speaker that says something when the line is crossed. I'm not sure if would scare away a predator or not...I'll have to try it. I've also heard that those red blinking lights work, and the varmit thinks the light is the eye of something bigger than him, so he stays away.

Well, when I got up this morning, the light was off in the coop and there was construction paper taped over all the windows of the coop. Looks like it was a bumpy night in there. But everyone was still alive and up on a perch. I have turned the light back on and opened the coop door. The pullets immediately came out and started to scratch, but the little ones are still in the house. We will have to see how the events unfold between now and the time I have to go to work.

If I had known how hard this was going to be, I never would have let Steve buy that second set of chicks. If the older ones would just lay some &*^#%^@* eggs already, this would all seem more worthwhile.

It's one of those things...
When I just dropped Slifer and Obelisk in with Jerry he was so darned glad for the company that it could've been Instant Martians as far as he was concerned.
I still have problems with Obelisk and Penny. Especially when Penny's broody. She'll give her a good thump on the way out the door and yank her feathers.
It could also be the personalities of the birds. Obelisk's a Leghorn which means she's a flighty very airhead of a bird. She's also the Queen of the House. And I had the unmitigated GALL to bring that little Pigsqueak in! How DARE I? Slifer would have been better with her, I think...

Esther & Winnie ~ After The Sleep Over ~The Occupation~
The post I made at 3 A.M.ish last night was right after I had found Esther on the floor again. she had gotten there on her own this time.
Just to be safe, I brought her inside and gave her a look over before putting her back on the roost.

It's always nice to wake up and find all your chickens still alive.
So far today:
The coop is no longer like a war field, it's really more like an occupied country now.
The Chicks paste themselves to the wall when the Pullets approach, the pullets walk around them looking over their shoulder and giveing them the evil eye; they move on and the chicks go back to doing whatever they were doing.

As I've said before, I know that personality wise, Esther tends toward submissive and Winnie really wants to Dominate.

Question of the day
Do any of you know if Winnie will ever reach a point where she stands up to the others, or is this relationship permanent?
