Etc... Freezer Beef Prices

Honestly I don't see the difference, except one has fur and one feathers. We seem to be biased in that way. People who have no trouble killing a chicken balk at whacking cute little bunnies. Admittedly I'm one of them, but I am going to do it anyway, as there really is no logical difference. It is all in my head. Slitting a chicken is no different from slitting a steer or a goat, and you do it for the same reasons... to keep the heart pumping in order to get a good bleed out.

Again I'm not judging folks who slit, especially those who sell their birds. This was all brought home to me just yesterday afternoon. I chop to get that instant death, as I feel it is the most humane. I don't mind a little blood in my meat. I'm not for sure but I think it probably adds taste to the chicken.

But a colleague has been bugging me since she found out I raise and kill my own pastured poultry to sell her some of my chickens. I didn't really want to do that since I don't think I'm ready for it, so I just gave her one. Handed it to her last night and you could see blood in the frozen water surrounding the bird inside the gallon plastic bag.

Her reaction was priceless. Wish I had a camera for that split instant between first seeing it and regaining her composure. "There's, uh... blood". She is all about humane treatment of animals, but I'm not sure she was ready for what that actually means.

I recommended she buy her birds from the farmer who sold us the beef, when he does chickens this spring.

I have put down horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, rats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, pet birds, as well as many types of ill wild animals, and rabbies suspected animals, etc. numbering well into 4 figures at a Vet School Pathology. I used captive bolt pistal, eletrocution, pentabarbitol, eather overdose as the case needed. Instant death or gently going to sleep. Trust me ... there is a wee bit of size difference and a wee bit more in brain evolution between a chicken and a mammal kept for consumption of their meat. Try to hold a steer, or sheep, or goat , or etc. when one slits a fully concious animal's throat , there is terror in their eyes, and the screams, and terrified struggle to be free is something one does NOT whant to experience.

So does no one use an ax anymore to dispatch a chicken? My dad had a stump with two nails driven in with enough space to put the chickens neck....he held onto the feet and held it's body streched out. With one whack of the ax it was beheaded...quick and probably as painless and stress free as any other method.

I see no less terror in the eyes of the birds I have slit, and while their cries were chicken screams, they were screams nonetheless.

But it isn't an issue for me any more since, for instant death, I use

And Katy, I do exactly as your dad did... two nails in the stump to hold the head and stretch out the neck.

I do believe this thread has been officially hijacked! How about a new one--Most humane slaughter methods--or something along those lines so the OP can have her thread back?

Happy Friday everyone!

It's not like there aren't a few of those threads kicking around.

Well, the point I was trying (nicely, I thought) to make was that this thread was about what a good price for freezer beef would be. The thread seems to have been hijacked, which happens sometimes. It's easy for a quick question to turn into a full-blown discussion. Now that the quick question has taken on a life of its own it would be nice to take it elsewhere and let go of the OP's thread.

There are myriad reasons why someone might want to pay premium prices for meat birds and beef. Humane treatment up to and including slaughter is one of them.

The original question was, did I pay too much? The answer is, no, you didn't, and here is one of the reasons why. It is one of one of my main purposes for raising my own animals, along with sustainability, which also pops in many seemingly unrelated threads here.

It is all connected.

Indeed. I did not mean to be snide, rather my point was that there is no need to start a new thread, just take this discussion to a thread already designed for the purpose.
