Ethical problem for a newbie

Max...if your doubting yourself enough to solicit others opinions than you obviously have a loving conscience...go VEGETARIAN! I've been one for 25 years (DH 30yrs) after growing up in a meat-n-potatoes family it's not that hard to convert over if you love animals enough not to eat them. It's easy to go to the store and buy a prepackaged slab of beef or a chicken w/o a face but when you have to kill it yourself, it will make you think twice.

Lori,

Here's the thing, I've pretty much made up my mind that I will have my lady's, and then the chickens. I have no problem eating meat. I think the problem I'd have is if I'd take care of them, raise them, play with them, etc. If I have them in another coop out back and all I do is treat them like food. I think I could do it. :|

Hey Max - that's cool. I really do respect those who have the ability to raise their own meat as it is much more healthier than what you buy in the store and your taking responsibility for that animal. That same question was posed to me about whether or not I could slaughter my own meat and when I answered a profound "NO" then I just felt I had no right to consume it. Hunting is huge here so it's has given me a whole different point of view. I don't participant but I do understand why it is necessary to thin overgrown herds and the folks here use it to feed their families. It's the trophy hunting that turns me off. :thun

to the forum! I think that if people want to eat meat they SHOULD raise it themselves and have to slaughter it. It would keep alot of people taking eating meat for granted. Something had to give its LIFE for you to have a steak or chicken pot pie.
You will find lots of info and helpful people on this forum, glad you found us!

Lori,

I used to hunt deer, but I’ve really grown out of it. When I was younger and my family was struggling financially, the additional meat of a big doe helped a great amount. However, having grown out of the caveman man bloodlust stage, I’ve given it up. I haven’t hunting in about 6 years or so.

Trophy hunting completely turns me off like nobody could know. People say their culling the herd or whatever. That’s nothing but an out and out lie. They have some funky macho BS thing that makes them have to kill animals for absolutely nothing. Bear and moose hunting in particular make me very angry. Why on earth do you need to kill a bear? There is no relevant reason one could give. Moose either. If you live in a village in the Alaskan bush and getting meat is next to impossible, I have nothing what-so-ever against that. But when you live in Tampa, FL and fly six thousand miles to kill a moose, cause you want to kill a moose; that’s bullpoop.

I love to fish, but only in a extremely rare occasions will I actually keep one. I don’t think I’ve kept a fish in 8 or 10 years. I won’t stop others I’m fishing with from doing it. I’ll try to talk them out of it. But it doesn’t always work. Fishing and hunting are kind of related in a way. When you want a fish to eat, you need to take the smaller sized ones. It’s the complete opposite of normal thinking. You catch a big fish, you have to keep it right? Wrong. Larger fish are the ones who breed and support the population. Kill them and you take a chance on wiping out the whole lot. That’s why I always laugh when I hear guys say they’re culling deer when they’ve passed up 20 of them to kill the one with the biggest antlers. Duh, how stupid could people be. If you could do anything to improve the herd, it would be to cull some of the does. A good buck to doe ratio is very important to a healthy herd. Also, like with the fish, you kill the largest deer, you kill years and years of good genetics and survival ability that deer would impart to its offspring.

Kind of a long winded way to say I agree with you.

Max
